Breaking Barriers and Building the Future: The Instill Education and Innovation Edge EduMentor Programme

Early Childhood Development (ECD) is a critical yet under-resourced sector in South Africa. As highlighted in a blog we penned earlier this year, quality ECD is essential for laying the foundation for a child’s development, health, and well-being. However, many ECD practitioners lack the training and support they need to deliver the best possible care and education. This includes a clear understanding of how to teach young learners foundational literacy skills and create play-based learning experiences that support childhood development.

Leveraging Blended Learning to Expand Access

The Instill Education and Innovation Edge EduMentor Programme is designed to address the challenge of limited access to ECD training by leveraging technology and existing networks. The program employs a blended learning modality, combining in-person workshops with online learning components. This approach allows for flexibility and accessibility, ensuring that ECD practitioners can access training regardless of their location or schedule.

Innovative WhatsApp-Based Training for Remote Areas

Recognizing the challenges faced by ECD practitioners in remote areas with limited internet access, the EduMentor Programme has developed an innovative approach: WhatsApp-based facilitated sessions. These sessions allow participants to engage in discussions, share experiences, and receive support from experienced facilitators, all through a familiar messaging platform. This approach ensures that ECD practitioners in even the most remote areas can benefit from the program’s resources.

Building on Existing Networks: Collaboration with Greater Soweto ECD Forum

Collaborating with existing ECD networks is crucial for maximising the impact of training programs. The EduMentor Programme has partnered with the Greater Soweto ECD Forum to provide both in-person and blended learning opportunities for forum members. This collaboration leverages the Forum’s existing reach and expertise to ensure that the program benefits a wider range of ECD practitioners.

The Upskill Advantage
